RISE

RISE (Resilience Integration and Sustainable Empowerment)

Uganda continues to experience a significant influx of refugees from the Democratic Republic of Congo due to ongoing conflict in the eastern region. With over 567,000 Congolese refugees currently in the country and hundreds arriving daily, refugee settlements in western and southwestern Uganda—particularly Kyaka II and Nakivale—are under increasing pressure.

The growing numbers are stretching already limited humanitarian resources, further exacerbated by declining donor funding and reductions in food assistance. The most vulnerable groups—especially women, children, the elderly, and the sick—face heightened risks related to food insecurity, limited access to healthcare, and lack of sustainable livelihoods.

The project aimed to save lives and strengthen resilience among newly arrived and vulnerable DR Congo refugees and host communities in Kyaka II settlement.

Objectives

  • Provide cash assistance to 647 highly vulnerable individuals, including the elderly, sick, and mothers
  • Strengthen food security and nutrition for 1,000 vulnerable households through climate-smart agriculture
  • Build community resilience by equipping beneficiaries with skills in sustainable farming, savings, and income generation
  • Promote inclusive support for persons with special needs (PSNs) and improve their capacity for self-reliance

Impact

  • Reached approximately 4,000 direct beneficiaries (1,000 households)
  • Benefited over 10,000 indirect beneficiaries within the wider community
  • Improved access to food, income opportunities, and basic needs for vulnerable refugee households
  • Strengthened long-term resilience and self-sufficiency through skills development and agricultural support
  • Enhanced community stability and cooperation between refugees and host communities
